Sometimes the influence of social media trends, gurus or just fictional characters makes real-life people change themselves to look like their role models.

Nexter.org gathered cases when women desperately wanted to be like Barbies and here what they got.

Removing ribs to become Barbie

Kerry Miles, 34, from Essex, says she is obsessed with the idea of looking like a Barbie doll.

She added: “I have been obsessed with Barbie since I was a teenager but it was only five years ago that I started to dress like her too.”

She has spent months eating a dedicated diet and wearing a waist trainer- a corset designed to shrink her waistline – for five hours every day. But despite shrinking her waist by a staggering five inches, the 34-year-old isn’t finished yet on her mission to gain a svelte figure like her doll idol.

She is planning to shrink her waist by another three inches and has even saved £15,000 for surgery to have six ribs removed.

The full-time mum, from Chelmsford, Essex, said: “I hated not having curves and being straight up and down. I started wearing my waist trainer at the start of this year as I wanted to shrink my waist.”

She said: “I have been told that ribs aren’t supposed to be removed and it’s not something UK surgeons will perform due to the dangers. It could damage my organs and cause lots of complications later down the line but I think it’s a risk worth taking.”

Ophelia Vanity from California

Ophelia Vanity, 30, from Los Angeles, California has splurged tens of thousands of dollars on Botox, fillers and treatments, in a bid to emulate the iconic doll.

So far, the wannabe Barbie has spent $35,000 (£27,670) on cosmetic procedures, and is also eyeing breast and bottom implants and wants to have rib removal surgery to give her more of an hourglass shape.

‘I’ve always been into Barbie. As a kid, I’d get a doll every Christmas or birthday. I had a dozen or so and would play with them all the time,’ said Ophelia.

Meet Valeria Lukyanova, a 21-year-old Ukrainian model who has made it her life goal to become a live Barbie doll, the plastic icon made famous by US toy maker Mattel.

The logic of wanting to look like a Barbie doll in the first place aside, one must admit she has achieved her goal, including a vacant, doe-in-the-headlight staredown.

Lukyanova has become an internet sensation, although some sources claim she might be a Photoshop-perfected hoax.
