Trump News: Trump Announces Withdrawing from the Iran Nuclear Deal – This Is Why It’s So Important

President Donald Trump on Tuesday announced the US government’s withdrawal from the Iran deal, marking one of the biggest foreign-policy decisions of his tenure so far. Follow to know more.

Trump complained the Iran deal supplied the “murderous” Iranian regime with “billions” of dollars and said allowing the deal to stand would be “unacceptable” and catalyze a nuclear-arms race in the Middle East.

“Since the agreement, Iran’s bloody ambitions have grown only more brazen,” Trump said. “The Iran deal is defective at its core.”

“Therefore, I am announcing today that the United States will withdraw from the Iran nuclear deal,” Trump added.

In a nutshell

President Donald Trump was weighing whether to continue waiving sanctions on Iran’s energy and banking sector that were lifted as part of the 2015 agreement in exchange for curbs on Tehran’s nuclear program.

Trump excoriated the agreement, even before winning the White House, as the “worst deal ever” and promised to tear it up on his first day in office.

The so-called Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) was agreed by Iran and the five permanent members of the UN Security Council – the US, UK, France, China and Russia – plus Germany.

It saw Iran agree to limit the size of its stockpile of enriched uranium – which is used to make reactor fuel, but also nuclear weapons – for 15 years and the number of centrifuges installed to enrich uranium for 10 years. Iran also agreed to modify a heavy water facility so it could not produce plutonium suitable for a bomb.

While the world holds breath waiting for the decision, CNN poll conducted by SSRS showed that almost two-thirds of Americans – 63% – believe that the US should not withdraw from the agreement made with Iran to prevent the country from developing nuclear weapons.

Only 29% believe the US should withdraw.

The strongest proponents of withdrawing from the treaty are Republicans (51% say the US should withdraw), conservatives (47%) and those who approve of the job Trump is doing as President (46%).

The decision could mark a signature moment for Trump’s presidency. It gives him the chance to cement his “America First” philosophy but risks triggering unknowable consequences that in a worst-case scenario could lead to war with Iran.
