What is “Day Zero”?

No, it’s not a new blockbuster or disaster movies, it’s a reality that soon may bring the extra dry season to South Africa.

“Day Zero” is the date the Cape Town estimates it will run out of water. It was set to happen on April 21 but had been pushed up to April 12.

On Monday, the city announced it now expects “Day Zero” to be April 16, if necessary measures aren’t taken to salvage water, abcnews reportes.

“This week our dashboard shows a slight outward movement of Day Zero,” the city said Monday, “mainly due to a reduction in agricultural releases from the dams over the previous week.”

In order to maintain water in the city and try to avoid Day Zero, the government is taking extensive measures, known as Level 6B water restrictions.

New rules

New water tariffs will also go into effect starting Thursday. Taps in homes and businesses will be turned off until the rains come.

Some of the restrictions include limiting each person’s water use to a maximum of 13.2 gallons, regardless of location – home, work or school. The city will also restrict borehole use for irrigation to Tuesdays and Saturdays for one hour before 9:00 am and after 6:00 pm.

The reason for such extreme situation is a three-year drought, considered the worst in over a century.

“When Day Zero comes, they’ll have to call in the army,” said Phaldie Ranqueste, who was filling his white S.U.V. with big containers of water at a natural spring where people waited in a long, anxious line.

South African officials say Cape Town is now at serious risk of becoming one of the few major cities in the world to lose piped water to homes and most businesses.
