Health battle on KUWTK

The reality show star Kim Kardashian was dealing with some painfull symptoms lately – swollen joints, headaches, general fatigue. So, they decided to run some tests and it turned out that she tested positive for Lupus antibodies.

“Your antibodies are positive for Lupus and Rheumatoid Arthritis,”  Dr. Daniel Wallace explained.

“Sometimes you can get false positives in these screenings,” he added and said that the presence of the antibodies of lupus wasn’t the proof that Kim has a disease.

The family will visit the doctor once again on Friday next week.

“You know, you really do get in your head and think about the worst possible things that can happen,” Kim stated. “So, for the next few days it’s gonna be really hell…living, wondering what I have, what’s going on and how to fix this.”

The sisters were around Kim to support her: “You don’t know. That’s the scariest part, is you just don’t know,” Kylie said.

Why is Lupus a life-threatening disease?

A chronic autoimmune disease of unknown etiology is characterized by overproduction of organ-specific autoantibodies to various components of the cell nucleus with the development of immuno-inflammatory damage to tissues and internal organs.

The most common causes of death in the early period of the disease: infections and severe changes in the organs (damage to the central nervous system, cardiovascular system, acute lupus pneumonia, severe nephropathy), in a later period: complications of treatment (infection) and the consequences of accelerated atherosclerosis, thrombosis.

The organ lesions largely depend on the appearance of arterial hypertension and the use of corticosteroids; hydroxychloroquine positively influences. With an adequate diagnosis and treatment, 10-year survival is 80% of patients, and 20 years – 65%.

More than half of patients develop irreversible organ damage.

Women have this disease 6-10 times more often than men. In 90% of cases, the disease affects young women of reproductive age (20–40 years), however, it can develop in both children and the elderly people in both genders.
