Apple presented iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max is the 8-megapixel front-facing selfie camera. The first users spotted that this camera also acquired new feature that makes them look too good. It might be some kind of “beauty mode” filter that to smoothes the skin.

The feature got the name “beautygate” and is basically the same as any other “beauty mode” on the similar devices. Sounds quite good for a selfie-addicted person, right? Nevertheless, people were disappointed when they learn about it as there is no option to turn it off.

“I am so frustrated with this camera. I look stupid in snaps. It looks like I’m using an air brush filter,” Redditor gray_13 posted.

“I just got my phone and love it, but when I opened the camera app to the front facing camera, my face looked like it had a Snapchat filter on it. My skin looks too smooth,” w_illiam_ilson posted last week.

“So it looks like, whatever processing is going on here, with the facial recognition, and this smart HDR and whatever extras are there — because it’s even happening with Smart HDR turned off — is resulting in this almost covert beauty mode, this secret beauty mode,” Hilsenteger stated after trying selfie camera.

Samsung’s beauty mode

The camera on the Samsung Galaxy and Galaxy Note also has a “Beauty Face” mode. Mel Wells tried this new feature and commented on it is a sarcastic way:

“Wow Samsung. When you get a brand new phone and go to take a selfie and realise that the default setting on the front camera is automatically on “Beauty level 8″ which evidently means: seriously airbrushed face. This means everyone who gets a new Samsung phone and flicks the front camera on is automatically being told ‘Hi, we’re Samsung and we think you look way better when we automatically airbrush your selfies for you, x 8!!’

Thanks @samsungmobile for the vote of confidence, I think I’ll keep my freckles and imperfections since this is how I look in 3D and this is how all my friends see me in real life. I hope young girls are buying iPhones instead of Samsungs. (Wait, do iPhones do this too?) To clarify – no apps here – this is Samsung’s DEFAULT FRONT CAMERA SETTING.”

The same feature is available in the leading photo apps like Instagram and Snapchat. However, iPhone XS/XS Max don’t let you to turn off the feature.
