Cougar in Washington

Experts say there are 2,000 cougars in Washington. The authorities allow 250 to be hunted in 50 zones. Previously,  the hunters were paid for killing the mountain lions.

Some of them kill livestock or pets, some were noticed walking around the residential areas, however, the cases when people meet the cougar in Washington are still rare.

The numbers encourage to raise awareness about the problem: there have been about 25 deadly attacks and 95 nonfatal attacks reported in North America.

What to do if you meet

  • Minimal movement: If we believe the experts,  it’s known that people encountering the big cats such as the mountain lion should stop and pick up small children right away. The one should remember, rapid movements can trigger the animal’s anger.
  • Be calm: Instead, face the cat, speak softly and be clam: slowly back away and try to look as big as possible (stand on a rock or open a jacket).
  • Confidence: Make an eye contact with the cougar and be confident.
  • Stay Noisy: If you travel with big company, it’s a good idea to stay noisy. Talk among your group, carry a bell, and get extra loud when the wind is blowing strong or around loud water.
  • Fight for your life: If it attacks, you better prepare to fight back.
