Wattolümpiade – Mud Olympics 2018 

Hundreds of competitors from Germany and neighboring countries compete in sports on the mud flats at the mouth of the river Elbe. The Mud Olympics include football, volleyball, handball tournaments, sled racing and other kinds of sport.

The main aim of Wattolympiade is to raise money to help cancer patients and their families in the west coast area of Germany’s Schleswig-Holstein state.

The Mud Olympics has two mottos: “Schmutziger Sport für eine saubere Sache” (dirty sport for a clean cause) and “Stark gegen Krebs” (Strong against cancer).

This contest inaugurated in 2004 and since has been popular all around Germany and some European countries.

Since 2004, the event has raised more than €330,000 (£294,000) to help cancer patients and their families in the west coast area of Germany’s Schleswig-Holstein state.

The contestants can choose among football, volleyball and handball tournaments, and become covered in mud from head to toe. The event takes place over the weekend.

The interesting facts is that players taking part at Wattoluempiade are called wattlets and organizers are called wattikanos.
