China’s state news agency has shown a virtual robot that is able to read texts as naturally as a professional news anchor.

In the video below you can see it saying “Hello, you are watching English news programme. I will work tirelessly to keep you informed as texts will be typed into my system uninterrupted. I look forward to bringing you the brand new news experiences.”

Michael Wooldridge at the University of Oxford commented on this new AI robot the following way: “It’s quite difficult to watch for more than a few minutes. It’s very flat, very single-paced, it’s not got rhythm, pace or emphasis.”

“If you’re just looking at animation you’ve completely lost that connection to an anchor,” he added. “We will see it improve over time. The problem is that it could be very dull.”
