The parasite, Toxoplasma gondii, is famous for its ability to deprive mice of the ability to assess risks, and now there are indirect signs that it acts in a similar way on people.

In order to indicate this, researchers from the University of Colorado collected an extensive database, combing the cases of parasite infection and correlating them with the further state of the patient. Also, the study involved students and some scientists.

The research team was looking for some hint that there was a connection between the “risky” feature and the presence of parasites. Almost 1,500 students found Toxoplasma gondii, each infected was 1.4 times more prone to business management and 1.7 times more likely to focus on “management and entrepreneurship”.

As for 197 business professionals, the researchers noted that gondii-positive people were 1.8 times more likely to open their business.

“More than 30 million men, women, and children in the U.S. carry the Toxoplasma parasite, but very few have symptoms because the immune system usually keeps the parasite from causing illness,” Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says on its website.

Databases on infection rates over the past 25 years also showed that the infection could be used to predict business startups, as well as a lower level of fear of failure.

They gave a saliva test to 1,500 students and to  200 people attending seminars on how to start your own business.

“There’s this crazy finding that if you get infected with this parasite, you could get neurotic and nobody wants to get more neurotic,” Stefanie Johnson of the University of Colorado told NBC News.

“I always talk about this, and one day I was talking to my husband about the study and he said, ‘I lecture on that same exact study all the time.’ So we thought we should form a collaboration because how often do biologists and business professors get a chance to work together?” Stefanie Johnson said.

“We thought if all these things are true, maybe it predicts this behaviour that is kind of risky, which is entrepreneurship. It’s never a good idea to become an entrepreneur because the risks outweigh the rewards. Very few succeed,” she added.
