‘Upgrade’: 5 Reasons Why You Really Shouldn’t Watch Hyped Sci-Fi Thriller from ‘Get Out’ Producers
Leigh Whannell’s Blumhouse collaboration Upgrade premiered at SXSW in the wee hours of Sunday morning so Nexter.org prepared 5 key reasons you shouldn’t waste your time on it.Â
Boring plot
Upgrade is a sci-fi action thriller/dark comedy about a man who “upgrades” his brain to seek revenge. Grey Trace (Logan Marshall-Green) is fully paralyzed in an attack that leaves his wife dead. But when an inventor tells Grey about an experimental procedure that could restore his motion, Grey agrees to an artificial intelligence (A.I.) computer chip implant called Stem. Not only does Stem (voiced by Simon Maiden) allow Grey to walk again, but it turns him into an efficient killing machine … raising questions about who’s really in control.
No, It’s not Tom Hardy

We know what you are thinking but, unfortunately (or lucky) you won’t see Tom Hardy in Upgrade. Tom Hardy-type is Logan Marshall-Green. In the upcoming movie Venom, which shares an almost identical plot, the Tom Hardy-type is Tom Hardy.
The idea
Sci-fi is on top but when the idea is boring and you’ve seen it for thousand times you probably won’t like it. The story when an average man is implanted with enhanced physical abilities and becomes a vigilante after the violent death of his wife could be seen in Death Wish (original and remake), The Fugitive, Law-Abiding Citizen, Marvel’s The Punisher. Hope there’s no need to name all movies where a man was upgraded with different kinds of AI implants or robo-parts and became super powerful.

Obvious ending
Upgrade ends with a twist so obvious that the only way you’ll be surprised is if you’ve suffered your own recent chip implant that has wiped your memory of every movie you’ve ever seen.
Critics reviews
On review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, the film holds an approval rating of 77% based on 13 reviews and an average rating of 6.6/10.
‘Upgrade has cookie-cutter characters and a plot twist you can spot from miles away,” Kaitlyn Tiffany from The Verge wrote.
