The First Wookie

As every “” fan knows, Chewbacca is an alien known as a Wookiee, but you may not know that George Lucas didn’t invent the word “Wookiee” for his space saga. The name “Wookiee” first appeared in his sci-fi movie released in 1971, “THX-1138.” “THX-1138” was about an Orwellian future city where humans were forced to suppress emotions and were controlled by android police officers.

While making 1977’s “: Episode IV – A New Hope,” Lucas had to add some dialogue in post-production and hired a DJ named Terry McGovern. McGovern was recording dialogue for a car chase, and was the one who made up the throwaway line, “I think I just ran over a Wookiee on the expressway.” Lucas had no idea what the line meant, so McGovern explained he was just making a joke about a guy he knew named “Wookey.” Lucas kept the line, and ended up using the name in “.”

Chewbacca was a dog?

The character of Chewbacca was inspired by George Lucas’s big, hairy Alaskan malamute, Indiana. According to Lucas, the dog would always sit in the passenger seat of his car like a copilot, and people would confuse the dog for an actual person. And in case you’re wondering: yes, that same dog was also the inspiration behind the name of one of Lucas’s other creations, Indiana Jones.

The design of Chewbacca was inspired by the illustration of artist John Schoenherr appeared in the July 1975 issue of “Analog Magazine” for the novelette “And Seven Times Never Kill a Man” by George R.R. Martin. Yes, the same Martin who later created “Game of Thrones.” The illustration is strikingly similar to the final illustration McQuarrie created for Chewbacca, except for the rows of breasts on the original. Even Chewbacca’s signature bowcaster is there.

How old is he?

In  Episode IV: A New Hope, Chewbacca is 200 years old.

His name is of Russian origin

The name “Chewbacca” was derived from the Russian word Sobaka(собака), meaning “dog.” The term “Wookiee” came from voice actor Terry McGovern; when he was doing voiceover tracks for Lucas’s directorial debut, THX 1138, McGovern randomly improvised the line, “I think I just ran over a Wookiee” during one of the sessions.

What we know about his family

According to the infamous  Holiday Special, Chewbacca had a wife named Mallatobuck, a son named Lumpawaroo (a.k.a. “Lumpy”), and a father named Attichitcuk (a.k.a. “Itchy”). In the special, Chewie and Han visit the Wookiee home planet of Kashyyyk to celebrate “Life Day,” a celebration of the Wookiee home planet’s diverse ecosystem. The special featured appearances and musical numbers by Jefferson Starship, Diahann Carroll, Art Carney, Harvey Korman, and Bea Arthur, and marked the first appearance of Boba Fett. Lucas hated the special so much that he limited its availability following its original airdate on November 17, 1978.

David Prowse, the 6’5” actor who ended up portraying Darth Vader—in costume only—originally turned down the role of Chewbacca.  When given the choice between portraying the two characters, Prowse said, “I turned down the role of Chewbacca at once. I know that people remember villains longer than heroes. At the time I didn’t know I’d be wearing a mask, and throughout production I thought Vader’s voice would be mine.”

Lost in translation

Funny fact! In Italy the name of Chewbacca was changed to Chewbecca and his nickname is Chewbe.

His voice

Chewbacca’s voice was created by the original films’ sound designer, Ben Burtt, from recordings of walruses, lions, camels, bears, rabbits, tigers, and badgers in Burtt’s personal menagerie.

Now let’s get the actual man inside the Chewbacca costume, Peter Mayhew. Mayhew was spotted by a casting director to be the live-action double of the stop-motion animated Minotaur-like robot, the Minoton.

When he went to the audition, he was sitting on a sofa waiting for George Lucas, and when Lucas walked in, Mayhew stood up. Lucas took one look up at him and said, “Hmm, I think we’ve found him.” The rest is a very large and hairy history.
