The White House’s “zero tolerance” immigration policy and resulting separations of undocumented parents and kids are exploding into the massive tragedy that changes the face of America.

Nexter.org gathered the brief facts about the situation as for Tuesday.

Children are held ‘in cages’

Reporters and Democratic lawmakers have been allowed inside a detention centre that lies at the heart of a growing storm over a new US policy separating migrant children from their parents, BBC reports.

Despite they were not allowed to take photos or videos, US Customs and Border Protection later released several images.

The Texas facility is known as Ursula, though immigrants are reportedly calling it La Perrera – dog kennel in Spanish – in reference to the cages used to hold children and adults who have ended up there after crossing the border from Mexico illegally.

“One cage had 20 children inside. Scattered about are bottles of water, bags of chips [crisps] and large foil sheets intended to serve as blankets,” the Associated Press reports.

Statistics

Between October 1, 2017 and May 31, 2018, at least 2,700 children have been split from their parents. 1,995 of them were separated over the last six weeks of that window — April 18 to May 31 — indicating that at present, an average of 45 children are being taken from their parents each day.

The Trump administration has separated over 2,000 families at the US/Mexico border. This visualization from Vox’s Javier Zarracina shows family separations over six weeks, from mid-April to the end of May.

How to help

Organizations like National Domestic Workers Alliance and Families Belong Together have hosted events across the country to raise awareness and call for aid to families who have been separated.

Advocates on this issue can find out who represents your state and contact them to express disapproval of the separation of immigrant children from their parents at the border. A sample script is at the American Civil Liberties Union website. Find the contact information for Congress at Senate.gov and House.gov.

Also, organizations like the ACLU and National Domestic Workers Alliance have petitions on their websites that call on the Trump administration to stop separating immigrant children from their families.

Some organizations that take donations and volunteers in support of the children are below.

Reactions

All five living first ladies have now openly criticized the Trump administration’s “zero-tolerance policy” of separating families who cross the border illegally.

  • Current first lady Melania Trump also expressed concern about the situation, though she did not break with her husband’s position that only Congress can stop the separations.

“Mrs. Trump hates to see children separated from their families and hopes both sides of the aisle can finally come together to achieve successful immigration reform,” her communications director, Stephanie Grisham, told CNN on Sunday.

  • Former first lady Laura Bush said she appreciated the need to protect the border, but added, “This zero-tolerance policy is cruel. It is immoral. And it breaks my heart.”

“Our government should not be in the business of warehousing children in converted box stores or making plans to place them in tent cities in the desert outside of El Paso,” Bush wrote. “These images are eerily reminiscent of the Japanese American internment camps of World War II, now considered to have been one of the most shameful episodes in U.S. history.”

  • Former President Bill Clinton said in a tweet on Sunday, Father’s Day, that “children should not be a negotiating tool.”

  • While speaking publicly at an event in New York City on Monday afternoon, Hillary Clinton took a forceful stand against the policy, calling President ’s repeated claim that family separations are mandated by law an “outright lie.”Clinton also took aim at Trump administration officials, such as attorney general Jeff Sessions and White House press secretary Sarah Sanders, who have cited the Bible to defend the policy.”I went to a lot of years of Sunday school. I even taught it from time to time,” she said. “I’ve studied the Bible, both the Old and the New Testament. And what is being done using the name of religion is contrary to everything I was ever taught. Jesus said suffer the little children unto me — he did not say let the children suffer.”

  • Former first lady Michelle Obama then re-tweeted a link to Bush’s op-ed, adding the message, “Sometimes truth transcends party.”
  • Rosalynn Carter, the 90-year-old former first lady married to former President Jimmy Carter, put out a statement addressing the separations through her office on Monday afternoon: “When I was first lady, I worked to call attention to the plight of refugees fleeing Cambodia for Thailand. I visited Thailand and witnessed firsthand the trauma of parents and children separated by circumstances beyond their control,” the statement said. “The practice and policy today of removing children from their parents’ care at our border with Mexico is disgraceful and a shame to our country.”

Religious leaders, including Cardinal Timothy Dolan and Franklin Graham, a key Trump ally, also faulted the morality of the separations last week.
