The detective, in this case, will be Academy Award winner, Mahershala Ali. According to HBO’s official spiel, the new season will follow his character, Wayne Hays, through the Ozarks in Arkansas as he investigates a “macabre crime” involving two missing children.
Much like the first season, the third looks like it will use fragmented memories and multiple timelines to tell a twisty story. Ali’s Hays is a detective from Northwest Arkansas, but the show is set in the Ozarks — a region that is spread over four different states: Missouri, Arkansas, Oklahoma and Kansas.
Ali is joined by John Charles Dickson, Stephen Dorff, Carmen Ejogo, Ray Fisher and Sarah Gadon.

This time the anthology will get a new locale.
According to HBO, Season 3 “tells the story of a macabre crime in the heart of the Ozarks, and a mystery that deepens over decades and plays out in three separate time periods.”
Season 2 was set in California.

Pizzolatto will also direct a couple of episodes alongside Daniel Sackheim (The Leftovers, Game of Thrones, The Americans) and Jeremy Saulnier (Blue Ruin, The Green Room.) Saulnier will direct the first two episodes.
Premiere date
True Detective season three will premiere on HBO in January 2019. So, there is so much time to spend waiting for the upcoming premiere and hoping it will be better than the second season.
