Time “Person of the Year 2017” Winner and Why It Matters

1073

This year Time choice is not a single person but a group of people called “The Silence Breakers”, who represents the anti-harassment #MeToo movement.

Today, October 6, Time magazine published their final choice on Twitter.

The wave of shocking revelations rocked the world as millions of women started to share their stories about being sexually harassed and assaulted.

The movement began after Ashley Judd’s interview where she revealed Harvey Weinstein’s behavior in New York Times.

“I started talking about Harvey the minute that it happened,” Judd says in an interview with TIME. “Literally, I exited that hotel room at the Peninsula Hotel in 1997 and came straight downstairs to the lobby, where my dad was waiting for me, because he happened to be in Los Angeles from Kentucky, visiting me on the set. And he could tell by my face—to use his words—that something devastating had happened to me. I told him. I told everyone.”

Later in October actress Alyssa Milano tweeted: “If you’ve been sexually harassed or assaulted write ‘me too’ as a reply to this tweet.” The hashtag was tweeted nearly a million times in 48 hours. The #MeToo (swiftly adapted into #BalanceTonPorc, #YoTambien, #Ana_kaman and many others) movement was founded by activist Tarana Burke on Twitter a decade ago to raise awareness about sexual violence.

As a result, the behavior of Harvey Weinstein, Kevin Spacey and dozens of other men were unveiled to the world.

“This is the fastest moving social change we’ve seen in decades, and it began with individual acts of courage by hundreds of women – and some men, too – who came forward to tell their own stories,” TIME editor-in-chief Edward Felsenthal told NBC’s Today programme.

Tough decision

Time yearly announces the person of the year basing their selection on a person or group of people who most influenced the news during the past year for better or worse.

Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman won the reader’s poll but the magazine announced ‘The Silence Breakers’ as their pick for 2017 Person of the Year on Wednesday.

Before that, president Trump said he refuses to be Time Person of the Year once again, however, the magazine denies that saying they do not “comment on our choice until publication, which is December 6.”
