In a nutshell

Earth sent something to Mars and it’s NASA’s InSight spacecraft that is about to complete its seven-month journey to Mars. It all went well, a NASA probe named InSight landed near the Martian equator shortly before 3 p.m. EST.

It cruised 301,223,981 miles (484,773,006 km) at a top speed of 6,200 mph (10,000 kph). That means spacecraft slowed down from 12,300 mph as it entered the top of the Martian atmosphere — to a complete stop on the ground six and a half minutes later.

“Having successfully brought all the data back from InSight during its exciting entry, descent and landing (EDL) sequence – what you see before you is an image taken roughly 4,700 miles from Mars, about 10-15 minutes after EDL itself,” explained MarCO chief engineer Andy Klesh.

The InSight lander got on Mars just before 3 p.m. EST and sent to NASA the first image from the surface a few minutes later.

“There it is!” Rob Manning, the chief engineer at NASA, said.”There is the horizon back there, the bluish sky. That’s part of the lander deck on the front left.”

“This has been a fantastic day for spacecraft great and small, and our spacecraft are very small, only the size of a briefcase,” Andrew Klesh, chief engineer for MarCO, stated. “MarCO was there to relay information back from InSight in real time, and we did that, extraordinarily well.”
