First described in Key of Solomon
Key of Solomon is a pseudepigraphical grimoire supposedly written by King Solomon and dates back to the 14th- or 15th-century. Ualac or Valak was first mentioned in these goetic grimoires as a demonic creature.
Also, it was mentioned in the number of other publications such as Thomas Rudd’s works (Valu), Johann Weyer’s Pseudomonarchia Daemonum (Volac), the Liber Officium Spirituum (as Coolor or Doolas), and in the Munich Manual of Demonic Magic (as Volach).
According to these stories, Valak is known as the Great President of Hell.
Rides a dragon, presumably
Key of Solomon and other books depicts Valac riding a two-headed dragon and commanding 30 legions of demons. It was never shown this way in the movies, but we definitely can imagine Valac taking on the giant dragon.

Marilyn Manson-like nun
As the director of the movie, James Wan, states, “She’s got nothing to do with Amityville. At all,” and the characters mentioned in the movies. So, why Valak is here and in a form of the nun, actually?
The name of the demonic character was already known at the beginning of the production, but James Wan wasn’t quite sure about the design of the antagonist. Real-life Lorraine Warren told him she once saw “swirling tornado vortex with this hooded figure in there, and I remember hearing that and my first thought was, ‘Oh crap, that’s going to be a CGI character” and that is what inspired him to create The Nun.
“I had a strong outlook on the whole movie, but the one thing I wasn’t quite sure of [was the design of the demon character],” James Wan explained to io9. “I felt like I was still discovering it. And believe it or not, I always knew that I was going to do additional photography. So I was saving it because I was hoping I’d discover what that thing would look like as I was putting the movie together in post-production.”
