The Groundhog Day 2019 is on Saturday and we all will be watching a little rodent to say when we’ll finally change out warm coats to little skirts and shorts! Or maybe it’s all just a funny story for kids?

No, today we are not going to talk about the movie.

It’s a tradition of an animal, a groundhog, to see or not to see its shadow. Depending on the result, people make their weather predictions.

The club responsible for well-known groundhog Phil is entitled “The Inner Circle” It has 16 members, including Phil, that has their own unique nicknames, chosen basing of the profession of the members of weather phenomena.

Groundhog Day falls on a Saturday in 2019. The odd, more than 130-year-old American tradition, is always observed on Feb. 2 as a rodent is called upon to forecast whether we’ll endure six more weeks of winter, or get an early spring.

The undisputed star of Groundhog Day is Punxsutawney Phil and the celebration is held annually at Gobbler’s Knob in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania. The festival surrounding Phil’s prognostication was immortalized in the 1993 Bill Murray movie, “Groundhog Day.”

For the last two years, Punxsutawney Phil has seen his shadow, meaning a prolonged winter. He typically emerges around 7:20 a.m. after a lengthy ceremony that begins before dawn on Feb. 2.

What does it mean if Punxsutawney Phil sees his shadow (or doesn’t) on Groundhog Day?

If Punxsutawney sees his shadow on Groundhog Day, that means six more weeks of winter. If there’s no shadow, that means an early spring.

It sounds straightforward, but there’s a bit more to it that adds some mystique to the Punxsutawney tradition. The president of the Inner Circle of the Groundhog Club handles the translation of Phil’s observations relayed to him in “Groundhogese.”

How accurate Groundhog’s predictions are?

Well, if we take a look at the stats (yes, someone made this tab with predictions of the previous years) then we’ll see it’s actually not that bad – 50/50. But still, it isn’t worth believing those animals and their predictions. Better look for the trustworthy weather forecast website.
