“The Girl In The Spider’s Web” starring Claire Foy as the hacker Lisbeth Salander in the latest addition to the Dragon Tattoo series opens in theaters this week.

Nexter.org prepared for your a review of the movie ahead of its premiere.

Is “The Girl In The Spider’s Web” a sequel to “The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo”?

Yes, The Girl In The Spider’s Web is really a sequel to The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. However, instead of being the second book in the series, it is the fourth book in the Millennium series, and it’s written by a different author altogether. While the first three books were written by Stieg Larsson, The Girl In The Spider’s Web is written by David Lagercrantz, an author personally authorized by the estate of Larsson’s family.

What the movie is about?

Claire Foy is playing Salander, the tattooed queer hacker with a dark past, a don’t-care addiction to junk food and a bottomless hatred for men who hurt women.

Unlike the past films, “Spider’s Web” is wholly about Lisbeth and told through her eyes. The story takes on her childhood trauma, bringing back demons from her past as she seeks to uncover a plot involving a group of cyber criminals.

The plot to The Girl In The Spider’s Web fits more closely to Lisbeth Salander’s skill set than that of Mikael Blomqvist, but it doesn’t leave him out for a second. Blomqvist’s side of the story sees him focusing on an investigation of Swedish computer scientist, Frans Balder, who ditches a job in Silicon Valley to protect his autistic son. As it turns out, Balder is being watched by “The Spider Society,” a criminal collective who intend to do him harm.

Further drawing in Mikael is the fact that Balder has been associated with Lisbeth in some sort of technological chicanery. With Salander pissing off the NSA at the beginning of the story, there’s also attention from another continent focused in the direction of the action taking place in Sweden.

Why is Lisbeth recast in “The Girl in the Spider’s Web”?

As you might know, the franchise is making a big jump – moving away from The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo actress Rooney Mara’s portrayal in the 2011 film and replacing her with The Crown‘s Claire Foy.

The actress opened up and said: ‘I was hopeful to come back, but they decided to do a different thing. It was always a character I wanted to revisit; but that’s not what happened.’

“There was a lot of debate — but not with me — mostly debate among the studio, if they [were] taking that route or not,” says Spider’s Web director Fede Alvarez (Don’t Breathe), about the possibility that Mara might reprise the role. “Eventually, I think it was me coming in, saying, I preferred to have my own cast. As a director, I just didn’t like the idea of taking someone else’s cast. As much as I admired Fincher as a filmmaker I think Rooney Mara is Fincher’s Lisbeth, right? And I wanted to find my own.”

Who’s playing Mikael Blomqvist?

The role of Lisbeth’s partner in crime / journalist on the go, Mikael Blomqvist, is an equally important subject of discussion when taking into account the production of The Girl In The Spider’s Web. Originally played by Michael Nyqvist, the role of Blomqvist went to Daniel Craig in David Fincher’s adaptation of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo.

There weren’t many rumors as to who might ultimately nab the role, but early 2018 brought the news that Swedish actor Sverrir Gudnason, who was most recently seen in America playing tennis legend Bjorn Borg in Borg/McEnroe, had signed on to play Blomqvist in the new film.

As of writing, The Girl in the Spider’s Web Rotten Tomatoes score is a solid 68 percent.

With mixed but favorable reviews, the movie is high on the list of must-see this November.

IndieWire’s Katie Erbland review is titled: “Claire Foy Is the Best Lisbeth Salander Yet in a Sequel Too Muddled to Leave Its Own Mark” and gave it a C+

Deborah Young of The Hollywood Reporter wrote: “It is edgy and action-packed, and Alvarez’ direction keeps the tension high through a slew of ever-more-improbable threats to Lisbeth and her allies.”

For Forbes, Scott Mendelson wrote: “The film is less focused on men who hurt women and more concerned about men and women who threaten the world order.”
