The giant coffee chain announced its plan to close all US stores and corporate offices on May 29 for employees racial-bias training following the arrest of two black men at a store in Philadelphia.

What has happened? 

says it will close its 8,000 company-owned stores in the United States for one afternoon on May 29 to educate employees about racial bias.

The special training will be provided to about 175,000 company’s workers.

Such decision is a reaction to the latest incident – the arrest of two black men who were waiting for a friend at a Philadelphia without making an order last week. The store manager called the police.

After the incident upset many customers, issued a three-sentence apology on social media, which received even more backlash.

CEO Kevin Johnson had a personal meeting with the two men on Monday and apologized for how they were treated.

The company says the manager who called the police is no longer working at that store.

“I’ve spent the last few days in Philadelphia with my leadership team listening to the community, learning what we did wrong and the steps we need to take to fix it,” CEO Kevin Johnson said in a statement.

“While this is not limited to , we’re committed to being a part of the solution,” he said. “Closing our stores for racial bias training is just one step in a journey that requires dedication from every level of our company and partnerships in our local communities.”
