Last Friday, two pilots noticed some object in the sky that was moving very fast but air control couldn’t explain what it was. So the investigation began and of course, the main version so far is that pilot saw UFO.

Witnesses of miracle or natural phenomenon?

Irish aviation officials are investigating after two airline pilots reported seeing unidentified flying objects off the southwest coast of Ireland last Friday.

A pilot of a British Airways flight contacted air control last Friday, November 9, asking if there were military scheduled in the airspace. Air control said there was nothing showing for that evening.

“It was moving so fast,” the pilot said, according to audio of the call released by LiveATC.net. “It appeared on our left-hand side and rapidly veered to the north. We saw a bright light and then it disappeared at a very high speed.”

A second pilot, flying a Virgin Airlines plane, also called into air traffic control. “A meteor or another object making some kind of re-entry. It appears to be multiple objects following the same sort of trajectory. They were very bright from where we were.”

Both pilots were in conversation with Shannon Air Traffic Control as they traveled eastbound through Irish airspace at levels above 7,450m. There were no known military exercises in the area at the time and Shannon air traffic control confirmed that there was “nothing showing on either primary or secondary radar”.

However, astronomer Michael Garrett, professor of Astrophysics at the University of Manchester, said while the pilots’ reports should be taken seriously and investigated, there were “many other natural phenomena” that could explain the sightings, other than a UFO.

Prof Garrett told WLRfm in Waterford that a meteorite breaking up, high in the earth’s atmosphere “would also be traveling at speed and it would break into multiple components”.

Prof Garrett said a meteorite was “a more reasonable explanation” of what the pilots had seen.

“But, at the same time, I think a report like this one, with witnesses that I would generally think would be very strong witnesses, giving good evidence, those are the things you should be investigating,” he said.

Prof Garrett said usually air flight crews “are experienced and they typically are very good observers of what is out there, so I think one has to take this kind of thing seriously”.
