Simple Tips to Save Money Around the House

Everybody is looking for ways to save money. Our households are one of our biggest expenses. By making a few little tweaks around the house, you can generate big savings. Here are five easy ways to save money around the house.

Lower the Utility Bills

Heating bills, electricity, gas, water, sewer, and other utilities are the first places to make some adjustments. Turn off the lights when you leave the room as well as turn off any appliances and electronics that are not in use. This way you will help conserve energy and save money. Also, check your insulation to avoid wasting energy. If you have poor quality insulation, or if it’s old and losing effectiveness, you could be wasting not only an incredible amount of energy, but you could also be significantly overspending on your electricity bills. Additionally, do not leave the air conditioner on while the windows are open- heating or cooling a house with poor insulation is both wasteful and ineffective.

Use cheap ways to clean

Are you spending huge cash every month on cleaning? To save on cleaning, do the following:

  • Clean the microwave with just lemon and water. Put half a lemon in a small bowl of water into the microwave and ‘cook’ on full power for 5 minutes. The steam loosens the dirt so you can wipe it off easily. This will also leave a nice lemony smell in the microwave.
  • To eliminate bad odor in the house, spray a piece of cotton wool with some leftover perfume and put it in your vacuum cleaner bag or dust collector
  • A bottle mixture of vinegar and water can be used to clean windows, tables, countertops, cabinets and sinks. The mixture will also remove soap stain build-up in bathtubs and washing machines.

Grow Your Own Vegetables

Growing vegetables in your home garden can be a great way to spare some cash. It is also a fun activity for the whole family. You don’t have to buy expensive tools or containers to plant a few tomatoes or onions. Just ensure that the vegetables are easy to grow in containers. You can use simple wooden boxes or large buckets as containers. By growing your own vegetables you will save time, money, and gas. Spending time in the garden is also relaxing.

Do it Yourself

Hiring professionals to do jobs around the house uses up a big percentage of your savings. Doing these jobs yourself, from minor repairs, maintenance to installing windows is a great way of saving money. Some jobs like painting door frames or fixing a leaking faucet might require some skill, but you can save a considerable amount of money if you do it yourself. The most important points to know when doing DIYs is to have the right tools and materials and know the correct procedure. It is also crucial to do repairs immediately once you spot something is wrong to avoid huge repair costs. You can as well save more when you change your HVAC filters by yourself.

Switch to each one of these money-saving tips every week; you will be surprised with how much you will save. This is not an exhaustive list; look for more tips to keep you on the path to saving money. Don’t give up and don’t give in, because every little change you make can have a positive impact on your home.
