What you need to know

According to New York Times,  the special rule was adopted for autonomous vehicles to have a driver to take over the car in case of an emergency. The new requirement comes into force on April 2.

50 companies are allowed to test their driverless cars on the California streets. As a rule, their vehicles should have the option to be operated remotely.

Also, an important requirement states that these vehicles should be able to send a notification to law enforcement if something goes wrong.

Moreover, California  Department of Motor Vehicles asked companies to report all the accidents when humans are forced to take over for the cars.

California isn’t the first state to test the self-driving vehicles, however, it’s the only one to take this really seriously with safety as a top priority,

Previously, Arizona government allowed testing driverless cars, however, they didn’t bother to establish regulations and requirements.

Waymo has started testing autonomous cars in Arizona without human drivers. Uber has done the same, but they use human drivers.

Benefits

Self-driving test cars is a great opportunity for the whole transport system and is a big step toward the truly autonomous vehicles.

Driverless cars aren’t limited physically as humans, thus they can’t get into the accidents because of stress or inattentiveness.

As one of the benefits, the new California regulations are a great opportunity for advanced tech companies like Nvidia, Alphabet, and Apple to test their innovations.

Some analytics were brave to state 95% of all the vehicles will be driverless by 2040.
