Saddleworth Moor fire has forced dozens of homes near the area to evacuate and the army has been placed on standby as the fire moves ever closer to properties. The fire started on Sunday night near Buckton Vale but reignited on Monday morning when dry peat started to burn on Saddleworth Moor amid the UK’s ongoing heatwave.

Tameside Council has issued health warnings for local residents, urging them to avoid smoke inhalation. Firefighters moved residents from at least 34 homes in the Pennines as the fire reportedly edged just 200 metres from people’s homes on Tuesday night.
The blaze has been declared ‘the biggest in living memory’ with Greater Manchester Police saying the army are on standby to help if needed.

A number of schools in the area are closed today due to the blaze, 65,000 tonnes of water have been used on the fire so far and those living nearby have told of their fear as the flames inch towards their homes.

People nearby have been pictured wearing gas masks while those living 18 miles away reported seeing “ash falling from the sky” that is so thick “you can taste it”.

No injuries have been reported as a result of the fire, but people living nearby have been advised to keep windows and doors closed by Public Health England.
