Tameside Council has issued health warnings for local residents, urging them to avoid smoke inhalation. Firefighters moved residents from at least 34 homes in the Pennines as the reportedly edged just 200 metres from people’s homes on Tuesday night.

The blaze has been declared ‘the biggest in living memory’ with Greater Manchester Police saying the army are on standby to help if needed.

A number of schools in the area are closed today due to the blaze, 65,000 tonnes of water have been used on the so far and those living nearby have told of their fear as the flames inch towards their homes.

People nearby have been pictured wearing gas masks while those living 18 miles away reported seeing “ash falling from the sky” that is so thick “you can taste it”.

Images posted on social media showed bright orange flames lighting the night sky, while smoke from the can be seen for miles.

No injuries have been reported as a result of the , but people living nearby have been advised to keep windows and doors closed by Public Health England.
