Electron launch

The rocket was launched from the Mahia peninsula in the north-east of New Zealand at 2:43 pm local time and delivered three satellites for commercial customers into orbit.

One of the satellites is for Planet Lab, which takes pictures of the Earth from space, the other two for Spire, which collects data from space to track ship traffic and weather forecast.

In May 2017, the company carried out the first launch of the Electron rocket in New Zealand, but the rocket hadn’t reached the orbit.

It was reported that the main purpose of Electron is to deliver to orbit small satellites and other small cargoes up to 330–495 lb.

This launch cost the company $5 million, but they promised to cut the expenses. Total amount investment in Rocket Lab startup is $100 million.

Now the company has five Electron rockets in development and wants to launch more than 50 times a year.

The engineers of Rocket Lab are going to use the data from this launch to help plan future launches of NASA, Spire, Planet, Moon Express and Spaceflight.
