With ABBA songs old and new, an all-singing cast, this dancing extravaganza, if the trailer is anything to go by, looks like a perfect summer movie to go and see with friends.

If you forget the original story

For those who’ve forgotten the story, it was all about a girl called Sophie (played by Amanda Seyfried) who was about to marry Sky (Dominic Cooper) and who, unbeknown to her hippy mum Donna (Streep), had invited three men from her mother’s past who might just be her father to her Greek island wedding.

The trio of hapless would-be dads (Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth and Stellan Skarsgard) played second fiddle to a cast of confident, witty women — including Donna’s former bandmates Rosie (Julie Walters) and Tanya (Christine Baranski) — while the story unfolded against a backdrop of Abba classics.

OMG, have you seen the cast?

Meryl Streep may be the surprise star of Mamma Mia! but what’s even more unexpected it is t osee Cher among the cast member, who will play Streep’s’ mother.

In fact, so magnetic was the Streep effect that, at just the words ‘Mamma Mia’ and ‘Meryl Streep’, Pierce Brosnan said: ‘I’m in.’

The film is again set on the fictional Greek island of Kalokairi, where Sophie maintains her mother’s villa. Should we say that nature there is so beautiful that it could be a standalone reason to watch this film?

Iconic Cher is in it

Cher’s role and names of the Abba numbers she’ll sing are being kept under wraps. ‘Cher’s our secret weapon. It’ll spoil the fun if we give anything away,’ an executive connected to the film explained.

Cher, 71, has not been in front of film cameras for several years, although she has been busy touring and collaborating on developing a Broadway musical based on her life and career.

“The sequel’s biggest new name is Cher, as Sophie’s flamboyant grandmother, who arrives uninvited on the Greek island where the films are set to celebrate the impending birth of her great-grandchild,” writes the New York Times.

Strong chances to repeat the success

Taking into account how good and popular was the first movie, there’s a great chance the sequel will be also a box office hit.

The Hollywood Reporter writes, “While ‘Mamma Mia!’ was a success with American audiences, the $52 million film was an even bigger hit at the international box office, racking up 76 per cent of its global total overseas and amassing $609.8 million overall. If the excitement, surrounding the last film carries onto ‘Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again,” the filmmakers can expect to rake in more money this summer.

As you all remember, the music is a huge part of the Mamma Mia movie. The film’s soundtrack gives the game away, revealing exactly what tunes you can expect. Not only that but it lets you know who will be singing the songs in Here We Go Again.

A few lesser known tracks get an outing such as When I Kissed The Teacher and Kisses of Fire. There’s also the classic with Cher and Andy Garcia singing Fernando. Fans can also rest easy as the soundtrack gives away that Donna is back with Meryl Streep listed too. The star is singing not one, but two songs including The Day Before You Came.

‘Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again’ is released in cinemas on 20 July.
