Are all the sequels supposed to be a failure?

Critics are often skeptical about the sequels as it’s really hard to come up with something new and do go far away from the original movie at the same time.

Phil Johnston, the director and the producer of Ralph Breaks the Internet has answered this question and shared his view with Post Crescent:

“You kind of fall into two traps with sequels. One is that you’re just remaking the first movie with slightly different locations and stuff. The other is you’re making a movie that’s so radically different that it doesn’t feel at all like the first one.

“So, it’s quite difficult to find that sweet spot where you recognize the characters and the tone feels right but then the story is sufficiently different that it’s a different movie and it’s earned its way into the pantheon.

“[…]So ours is the first real sequel, so there wasn’t a lot to draw on. We found it very difficult — actually in some ways harder than doing the original because there is so much at stake and then you have those two pitfalls I talked about.”

  • “Ralph Breaks the Internet” is almost always inspired in the moment. The story team has a good idea that worked in the first film and gives us more of that, in a much bigger playing field,” Peter Hartlaub for San Francisco Chronicle.
  • “In addressing the very real issue of kids and screen time, this is an anti-cautionary tale. Still, deep-diving into the Internet does yield a few treasures,” Mara Reinstein for Us Weekly.
