  • Winter Olympic Games are going to be held in PyeongChang, South Korea on February 9-25, 2018.

  • This is the first time South Korea hosts the Winter Olympics. The 1988 Summer Olympics were held in Seoul, South Korea.
  • Winter Olympics 2018 estimated to $10 billion, that is five times less than the 2014 Sochi Olympics, which were estimated to be the costliest ever.
  • North Korea had to make some changing in the name for the location where Games will be held in order to not confuse with its capital, Pyongyang. So they decided to capitalize “C” in the PyeongChang resort name.
  • Pyeongchang is the smallest city to host the Olympic games since the 1994 Olympics in Lillehammer, Norway.
  • A pentagonal, 35,000 seats Olympic stadium has been created in Pyeongchang. It will only be used for the opening and closing ceremonies and will be torn down after the games.

  • NHL has decided not to be a part of the 2018 Winter Olympics. They are not ready to stop their own season to be a part of the games. This is the first time since 1998 that NHL has not participated in the event.
  • It is the first time since Salt Lake City 2002 that more than one athlete from Mexico will participate in the Winter Olympics.
