Prince Charles Celebrates the 50th Anniversary of Investiture as Prince of Wales – Pictures of the Ceremony and Unknown Facts

Prince Charles begins his annual summer visit to Wales on Monday, as he marks 50 years since his investiture. He is spending the week with his wife Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall, touring the country, as they carry out more than 20 engagements over five days.

The prince was 20 when he was crowned in a ceremony at Caernarfon Castle.

Charles was just nine years old when a recorded message from Queen Elizabeth II announced to an excited crowd at the 1958 Empire Games in Cardiff that she intended making him Prince of Wales.
The investiture was conducted against a backdrop of protests and even bombings. One of the bombs, which exploded at council offices in Abergele in the early hours of the day of the investiture, killed the two men it has always been assumed planted it.

Since then, the prince has worked on projects in areas of interest to him – urban regeneration, the environment, architecture, sustainable farming, music and the arts. In general, he has set up or become involved with 42 different charities or organizations in Wales.
He also set up the Prince’s Trust and Prime Cymru, which provide skills support and training to young people and the over-50s in Wales and elsewhere.

The 25th anniversary of his investiture came in the midst of the War of the Waleses, and just days after the screening of the controversial television documentary in which Charles admitted he had been unfaithful to Diana, Princess of Wales after their marriage had broken down.

Now, the prince has been married to his former mistress, the Duchess of Cornwall, for 14 years.

The Queen and senior royals including William and the Duchess of Cambridge, and Harry and the Duchess of Sussex gathered in March for a Buckingham Palace reception marking the prince’s 50th anniversary of his investiture.
