Our world is beautifully diverse and it is not surprising that weddings don’t look the same in different parts of the world. The wedding ceremony, design, aesthetics, and outfits vary from culture to culture. Brides from different countries do not always wear long and white wedding dresses that are typical of western countries. The choice of color and the type of fabric also vary as some are specifically tailored to one’s culture and religion.

In the old days, brides did not even wear white dresses for their weddings. Women used to just wear their best dress especially if they did not come from a prominent family and can’t afford to spend so much on a dress. It was actually Queen Victoria who made white wedding dresses popular back in 1840.

To get a glimpse of the different types of wedding dresses worn by brides from different parts of the world, we have listed some of them below for you.

Malaysia

The bride wears a traditional Malay dress called baju kurung, it is an embroidered long-sleeved blouse worn over a sarong in colors that usually match the groom’s outfit. The hair is covered with a headscarf or hijab called tudung as a symbol of modesty and a beaded shawl called selendang that covers the tudung. To top it all off, a crown sits prettily on the head of a Malay bride to signify her importance in the regal affair

Nigeria

There are many ethnic groups in this big African country so weddings vary from different religions, regions, and ethnicity of Nigeria. However, the Yoruba people, one of the most recognized ethnic groups, like their wedding bright and lively. Yoruba brides wear a brightly colored hand-woven cloth called Aso Oke. The top-class fabric that they use denotes high status. Brides also wrap their hair with a gele, a headscarf, or a tie that symbolizes marriage.

Korea

A hanbok, the national costume of Korea, is worn by the brides in traditional wedding ceremonies. This lovely ensemble is made of high-quality silk or cotton and consists of a high-waist skirt and a wrapped long-sleeved jacket. The hair of the bride is often adorned with elaborate and beautiful ornamental accessories such as hairpins and jewels.

India

In the Indian culture, a white wedding dress is out of the options as this color is associated with mourning so, instead, they go all-out with vibrant colors. Brides wear a sari or lehenga. Both are traditional attire for Indian women. The head is wrapped with a fancy headscarf and the rest of the body is adorned with heavy amounts of jewelry. Henna patterns can also be seen on the hands and feet of the bride to wish her the best of luck, prosperity, and good health as she goes through her marriage.

Tibet

Traditionally, in Tibetan weddings, brides wear wedding dresses in white made of wool. It can become difficult for the bride to be visible though as she is often layered with so many robes and aprons in vibrant colors.

Norway

Most Norwegian weddings now resemble modern western weddings wherein the brides wear a long white gown but some still prefer to keep it traditional and opt to wear a bunad, the national costume of Norway. This outfit is characterized by a skirt or dress made of woven wool, accompanied by scarves and jackets. The whole ensemble will then be completed with jewelry and buckles.

Many other types of wedding dresses are not commonly seen and may not be as popular as the others but even so, a wedding dress is only one part of the sacred ceremony held for 2 people who vow to get through life together as partners. As a bride, you can always choose to wear a traditional dress to honor the customs and religion of your country or you can go modern and be a JA bride when you choose to wear one of the beautiful wedding dresses of Justin Alexander. It is your wedding and you have the power to choose what you want to wear after all.
