Despite cold weather and temperature of 50 degrees Fahrenheit, 923 participants from 18 to 77 came for Spencer Tunick’s mass nude photograph. The work is called “Return of the Nude” is a part of Melbourne’s PROVOCARÉ arts festival. It features hundreds of people dressed (or undressed) in Handmaid’s Tale-like red cloaks.

The artist said that being naked in public can “be considered free speech. People want a sense of freedom when it comes to their bodies and public – that governments … and corporations don’t own your body,” the artist said.

The installation took place on Woolworth’s supermarket car park in the suburb of Prahran. Firstly, Woolworths didn’t let the artist use the site for the photoshoot. “I’m glad that the backlash made (Woolworths) reconsider,” he said. “We have to be more open as a society. We can’t think of the fear that people being naked on top of a roof is going to cause consternation, when in reality it’s an expression of freedom.”

Spencer Tunick will release the official images later, but until then, here’s some of them taken from the shoot:

Spencer Tunick is famed for his mass nude shoots. Once, naked people pose for him in the ice-cold Swiss glacier of Aletsch as a part of an environmental campaign about global warming. See it below:

Also, in 2010, he photographed over 5000 people standing on the steps of the Sydney Opera House.
