Guillermo del Toro faces Lawsuit
The son of Paul Zindel, who wrote the play “Let Me Hear You Whisper”, sues the Mexican director of the film “Shape of Water”, Guillermo del Toro, over plagiarism.
The lawsuit was filed less than two weeks before the Oscar 2018. It states that ‘Shape of Water’ almost completely repeats the plot of the play: the concept, characters, plot, themes and specific episodes.
In response, Fox Searchlight studio, which worked on the picture, accused David Zindel of deliberately filing a lawsuit at the final stage of the American film academy voting.
“Shape of Water” got 13 Oscar nominations, including for the best picture, the best director, and the best original screenplay.

The play “Let me hear your whisper”, 1969, which is believed to be the basis of “Shape of Water”, was filmed in 2003. “Shape of Water” is dedicated to the story of a mute cleaning lady, who works in a secret Baltimore laboratory in the 1960s.
She falls in love with a humanoid amphibian and tries to save him. Zindel’s play, which appeared on TV about 50 years ago, is about a deaf-mute cleaner working in a secret laboratory and wants to rescue the dolphin.
