AI future

China aims to become a world leader in AI by 2025 and the next step forward is to build a 13.8 billion yuan ($2.12 billion) artificial intelligence development park.

The campus will be constructed within five years and situated in the suburban Mentougou district in western Beijing. It will cover 54.87 hectares, the official Xinhua news agency reported.

The new AI park will focus on attracting enterprises that work on big-data, biometric identification, deep learning and cloud computing. It will also have 5G mobile internet, a supercomputer and cloud services.

It is expected the new tech park will become a home for around 400 businesses and is expected to create an annual output value of about 50 billion yuan.

The project developer is Zhongguancun Development Group and it’s looking for a partnership with foreign universities to build a “national-level” AI lab in the area.

China vs US race

It is expected that new AI park will help China to make a “major breakthrough” in AI technology by 2025.

China’s plan to fast-track AI development comes amid heightened tensions between Beijing and the United States over the competitive applications of AI in military technology.

Some experts including noted venture capitalist Jim Breyer have compared the competition between the U.S. and China in AI to the “space race of the ’50s.” However, he did say that the U.S. will lead China in AI.

“I don’t think they’ll (China) be number one, because I think there’s still a level of genius and creativity in Silicon Valley that persists and will always persist,” Breyer said during a CNBC-hosted panel in November.

China aims to grow the local industry to over 150 billion yuan by 2020 and 400 billion yuan by 2025, according to the State Council.
