What’s Momo Suicide Challenge?

“Momo” is a viral challenge that asks people to add a contact in WhatsApp (messaging app), then they have to harm themselves or to commit suicide. It’s similar to “Blue Whale challenge,” a social media group that encourages people to kill themselves, that led to multiple suicides in Russia and US.

Also, this one resembles Internet creepypasta character of Slender Man as, in 2014, two teenage girls in US tried to kill a friend to please the horror character.

Unfortunately, Momo challenge got to a 12-year-old girl in the district of Escobar. She died in an apparent suicide in Argentina, The Buenos Aires Times reports. The girl captured herself on camera before hanging herself. The police investigate whether someone made her commit suicide and it might be the sinister Momo Suicide Challenge.

“Momo challenge” is associated with the creepy cropped image of a sculpture of a woman with huge bulging eyes, ominous smile and Ring-girl-like black hair. The challenge started spreading in a Facebook group that encouraged to write a letter to person with an unknown telephone number.

This new challenge targets children and teenagers.  “Avoid talking with strangers,” The Mexican State of Tabasco warns.

“In social networks, the image of a terrifying woman is circulating,” police says in a statement. “They call her ‘Momo’ and she invites those who see her to write to her through WhatsApp.” If kids do not respond her, she will appear in the night and curse them.

“WhatsApp cares deeply about the safety of our users,” a WhatsApp spokesperson said. “It’s easy to block any phone number and we encourage users to report problematic messages to us so we can take action.”
