The history of the holiday

It all started with the marriage of the Bavarian heir to the throne, Ludwig I and Princess Therese of Saxony. On October 12, 1810, the day when their wedding took place, all residents of the city were invited to the festivities.

They were gathered in a large meadow, at that time located outside the city. Now, in honor of the princess, it is called Theresienwiese. That day, there was free beer and horse races for the Munichers.

Everything was so lively and fun, that Ludwig ordered to celebrate Oktoberfest annually. Every year, the traditions of the past were preserved, and new ones were added.

How it is celebrated

By tradition, on an opening day, exactly at 12 o’clock, the mayor opens a barrel of beer. This symbolic action gives a start to the “beer marathon”. Then a festive procession begins on the central streets of the city. At the head of it – “Munchner Kindi” – the symbol of the city – a young girl with a large bell in her hand riding a decorated horse. She is dressed in monastic clothes of yellow-black color.

This traditional costumed procession received the honorary title of the most beautiful, historically important and best organized in the world.

Another tradition of Oktoberfest is an opening of giant beer tents. Each year there are exactly 14 of them. The first “tents” of this kind appeared in 1896. 11000 people can fit in the largest of them – “Hofbrauhaus”, which belongs to the Munich alehouse.

But, of course, beer can be bought not only in tents: there are numerous beer points in the fresh air – beer gardens. And beer is carried by waitresses dressed in old German costumes.

What about children?

Despite the fact that beer is only for adults, children are not forgotten during the holiday. There are many carousels for them to ride and they can also buy ice cream and many other sweets.

They can ride on the special children’s railway, ride in horse-drawn carts, and watch special performances arranged for them. Also, there are luminous horns, hearts, hats with flashing lights and other interesting stuff sold on every corner.

Interesting facts

  • About 7 million liters of beer is drunk (every year this number increases), about 1.5 million fried chicken and sausages and about 84 bulls are eaten during the festival.
  • Oktoberfest has a blacklist of visitors and Paris Hilton is on it. In 2006 the star appeared in the traditional Bavarian outfit and with pigtails in order to participate in the advertising of wine without any agreement with the organizers of the holiday. After a strong outrage of the enraged audience, Paris was forever banned from appearing at the party.
  • The beer on Octoberfest is special. Only 6 breweries have a right to make it. It has 6% alcohol and makes you drunk faster.
