Netflix has just released the first trailer for a new Black Mirror special, and the standalone movie is coming tomorrow.

So, Nexter.org hurries up to report what we learned about it.

What the movie is about?

Set in 1984, “Bandersnatch” is the story of geeky teenager Stefan (played by Fionn Whitehead of “Dunkirk” fame) who sets out to turn a multiple-choice science-fiction book by the same title into a pioneering computer game that also presents the player with a series of choices.

Why the movie is called ‘interactive’?

For some time now, it’s been rumored that Black Mirror will be doing a choose-your-own-adventure episode. It means that every decision you make creates new possibilities for your character that will determine how his or her story unfolds, eventually leading to a variety of endings. Each unique outcome depends on pivotal decisions you make throughout the story.

If you’re not an experienced gamer, don’t worry – Netflix does a solid job of explaining how the experience works. Before Bandersnatch begins, you’re given a brief tutorial on what to do using your remote, game controller, or touchscreen, depending on which device you’re on.

So what exactly is Bandersnatch?

The term “Bandersnatch” was first mentioned in the series way back in season 3.

Bandersnatch also has quite a role in pop culture — outside of the Black Mirror world.

Most likely the first mentioning of this word was in Lewis Carroll’s novels Through the Looking Glass (1872) and The Hunting of the Shark (1874).

The canine-like beast is described as ferocious and ominous – could we expect the same out of the Black Mirror-version?

It’s not certain how much of an inspiration Carroll was for this feature-length special, however, it can be concluded that it is largely inspired by the real 1984 game.

Image Software developers began created Bandersnatch in 1984, but it never saw the light of day.

‘Make your choice’ meme

In the beginning, the main character is faced with a dilemma: Sugar Puffs or Frosties cereal?

You the viewer must select your choice on the screen, with no clue as to how monumental the consequences may be. Indeed, it seems many viewers have fallen down at the first hurdle.
