The setting

Nobody knows where Area X came from – a deadly dangerous territory, swarming with abnormal phenomena.

This terrifying zone is the place, where an ecological catastrophe occurred and paranormal activity was registered.

A secret government organization sends to the Area X one research expedition after another, but most often people do not return or return, but changed terribly.

The husband of the cellular biologist, Lena, returns half-alive from the expedition to the Area X. Doctors aren’t able to help him: all the attempts ended unsuccessfully.

The twelfth expedition is sent to the Area X to learn why their predecessors failed to reveal and the secrets of this mysterious place. However, the main purpose is to save Lena’s husband.

Leaving behind names and former lives, five women – a psychologist, a biologist, a topographer, a linguist and an anthropologist go to meet an alien, inhuman mystery, consisting of riddles and new forms of life.

Cast

The whole cast is practically womanish, which makes this thriller even more interesting.

The leading actor is Natalie Portman portraying Lena, Kane’s wife. She’s a cellular biologist, who served in army.

She’s followed by 4 women: Jennifer Jason Leigh as Dr. Ventress, Tessa Thompson as Josie Radek, Gina Rodriguez as Anya Thorensen and Tuva Novotny as Cass Sheppard.

Before approving Jennifer Jason Leigh for the role of psychologist, the authors of the film considered the actress Frances McDormand for this role.

Oscar Isaac (Lena’s husband – Kane) and Sonoya Mizuno (Katie) starred in the sci-fi thriller  ‘Ex Machina’ (2015), which became Alex Garland director’s debut.

Comments

Top critics rated this movie as “fresh”, which means they really liked it. Here are some of their comments:

“The result is daringly original and frequently beautiful, a shimmering treat from a singular intelligence,” Joe Morgenstern on Wall Street Journal.

“Ambitious and messy, “Annihilation” will likely leave you with more questions than answers. Mine is: “When can I see it again?” Sara Stewart on  New York Post.

“Broken down to the basics, Garland has delivered another movie that’s worth seeing. Like the Olympics, though, even when you put together a beautiful routine, points get deducted when you slip on the landing.” Brian Lowry on CNN.com.
