Munchausen Syndrome: Most Shocking and Heartbreaking Stories

2213

Munchausen syndrome (MSBP) is a mental disease when a caregiver, usually the child’s mother or a female close to the child, fabricates a child’s illness aiming to receive attention and sympathy form people.

A heartbreaking story of Texas mother who was accused of faking son’s illness is not a rare case. Nexter found some other extreme examples of this syndrome.

Kaylene Bowen-Wright is a mother of eight-year-old Christopher Bowen of Dallas who has been hospitalized more than 300 times and undergone 13 major surgeries.

As it was reported, in 2014 she told in the interview that her son had a rare life-threatening condition that affected his oxygen supply. People raised $30,000 for Christopher’s care.

The following year, a friend of Bowen-Wright’s used GoFundMe to raise $610 for Christopher who had been diagnosed with cancer and had just six months to live. Later, with the help of another campaign were raised roughly $8,000 for Christopher, but he actually didn’t need any of it donations.

Soon an investigation was launched, and on Dec. 6 Dallas police arrested Bowen-Wright on charges of injury to a child with serious bodily injury, alleging that she caused Christopher’s mysterious maladies. The documents allege that Christopher ― who was hooked up to an IV and oxygen at the time of his mother’s arrest ― does not have cancer and was put through repeated unnecessary medical visits, hospitalizations and procedures.

Lisa Hayden-Johnson

In 2001 Lisa Hayden-Johnson’s son, whose name has not been released due to legal reasons, was born prematurely.  As a result, he needed a feeding tube. Hayden-Johnson loved the attention and sympathy she received from having a sick child so much that she fabricated an elaborate con that he was gravely ill even after he got better. She also stated that he was confined to a wheelchair due to cerebral palsy and cystic fibrosis.  Donations from the public poured in, including money, a new car, and a cruise. The con lasted six years.
In 2007, a pediatrician became suspicious and soon her lies unraveled. She was arrested and pled guilty to child cruelty and perverting the course of justice. She was sentenced to three years and three months in prison.

Kathy Bush, a mother of Jennifer, was also suffered from munchausen syndrome. As a result, by the age of 8, Jennyfer had been hospitalized over 200 times and had undergone more than 40 medical procedures. She had suffered a weakened immune system, digestive issues, and seizures. As a result of her medical issues, her appendix, gallbladder, and some of her small intestine had been removed.

Thanks to nurses who started to suspect something, Kathy was arrested in 1996. Jennifer was placed in foster care, where she began to get better. In 1999, Kathy was convicted of aggravated child abuse. She served three years of a five-year sentence. She was also forbidden from having contact with her daughter.
