What happened?

The company stated it has learned that the hackers broke into more than 30 million user accounts, stealing the sensitive information(gender, names, email addresses, phone numbers, location check-ins) of around 14 million users. More than 400,000 people’s messages were revealed too.

Facebook reacted quickly and created a page that will tell you if your account was hacked. Using this special security page, New York Times reporter Mike Isaac posted on Twitter the kind of data that had been accessed in the breach:

So, how to learn that you have been hacked?

#1 Go to head to this security notice page

If your account was not part of the hacker attack, Facebook shows this message:

“Based on what we’ve learned so far, your Facebook account has not been impacted by this security incident. If we find more Facebook accounts were impacted, we will reset their access tokens and notify those accounts.”

#2 Learn what kind of information was stolen (in case you were affected)

Facebook statements will read:

“While we don’t know if the attackers will use any of the information they accessed, it appears the information may allow them or other third parties to use it to create and spread spam on and off Facebook,” a message to one affected account read. “We’re actively working with law enforcement as we continue to investigate.”
