Where We Going to Live: Mars City Design 2017 Winners

The theories and fantasies about colonization Mars began perhaps long ago before actually first visiting the red planet. NASA’s and scientists discoveries of the ground, liquid water questions, numerous expeditions and a strong need of answering is there life on Mars – gave birth to most innovative and futuristic projects connected with it.

One we’re talking about today is Mars City Design and results of the 2017 competition. Mars City Design selects, develops and nurtures the most innovative leading concepts for sustainable life on Mars.

This year, the winners competed in five categories: architecture, urban design, transportation, AI, sustainable energy. The participants had to solve the problem of habitable from local materials, when the minimum is brought from the Earth. Let’s see the Mars vision of the challenge participants.

Architecture

This year winner in architecture is Redwood Forest By Valentina Sumini and MIT Redwood Forest Team. Redwood Forest is a set of forest groves inside the spheres, united with by a system of tunnels, which are called “roots”. Roots allow you to travel safely between areas and give the opportunity to retire in private corners, as described in the MIT’s description. Tunnels also provide protection against cosmic radiation, micrometeorites and extreme temperature changes.

Each of the spheres with roots will become a place of life for 50 people. The authors of the project propose to build about 200 areas for the colony to accommodate 10,000.

“On Mars, our city will physically and functionally mimic a forest, using local Martian resources such as ice and water, regolith or soil, and Sun to support life,” Sumini told MIT News. “Designing a forest also symbolizes the potential for outward growth as nature spreads across the Martian landscape. Each tree habitat incorporates a branching structural system and an inflated membrane enclosure, anchored by tunneling roots.”

Urban Design

The winner in the category urban design is ‘Marscapes’ project by Romarie Gonzales and Arturo Hernandez, team from Puerto Rico.

Transportation

The project called ‘Around Mars in 80 Days’ by Zoé Ghiron, Selma Elbez, Laure Heidmann, Yves Simony, Rayan Ziane, Antoine Grison, Sarah Kassimi & École Polytechnique won in the category transportation.

AI

Amina Jambo together with  USC Team presented a project ‘Telepathy 2.0’ and was awarded in the AI category.

Sustainable Energy

Winner of the sustainable energy category, the ‘Tree of life’ project by Samer El Sayari explores the principles of a self-expanding infrastructure that acts as a hybrid between transportation and habitable environments.
