107 measles cases reported in US

Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have reported that “From January 1 to July 14, 2018, 107 people from 21 states (Arkansas, California, Connecticut, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Louisiana, Maryland, Michigan, Missouri, Nevada, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas, and Washington) and the District of Colombia were reported to have measles.”

Measles is still a normal phenomenon around the world, including countries in Europe, Asia, the Pacific, and Africa. So, how does it get to US? Travelers with measles bring it into the states.

Can you die from measles?

Measles is a contagious virus that spreads through the air (coughing and sneezing). Followed by high fever, rash all over the , stuffy nose and reddened eyes, it can disappear without treatment in several weeks.

However, 1-2 in 1,000 cases had lethal consequences (death from complications).

The main reason why the outbreaks took place is that Americans often travel, which results in an increase in measles cases in US through 2010-2018.

The biggest number of measles cases fall on the following years:

  • 2008: A lot of nvaccinated people spread measles, causing three large outbreaks in 2008.
  • 2011: More than 30 countries reported an increase in the outbreaks (the largest one was experienced by France, therefore brought to US from the European country).
  • 2013: This year, US faced 11 outbreaks, one of them ended up with 58 cases.
  • 2014: 23 measles outbreaks happened in 2014 in US, including one large outbreak of 383 cases in Ohio.
  • 2015: This one is called “multi-state” measles outbreak linked to an amusement park in California.
