Canadian officials have identified the suspect in Sunday’s deadly in Toronto as Faisal Hussain, 29. Two people died and 12 others injured in a in Toronto on Sunday night, according to Police Chief Mark Saunders.

What we know about the shooter 

The gunman was identified Monday as 29-year-old Faisal Hussain of Toronto.

The Ontario Special Investigations Unit (SIU) said it was releasing his name due “to the exceptional circumstances of this tragic incident”. Thirteen others were injured in the rampage in Canada’s largest city.

The SIU, which looks into incidents involving police which result in death, said a post-mortem examination on the suspected shooter is scheduled for Tuesday.



In a statement released to various media outlets, Hussain’s family expressed their “deepest condolences” to the victims and their families for what they called “our son’s horrific actions”.

They said their son suffered from serious mental health challenges and had struggled with untreatable psychosis and depression most of his life.

“Our hearts are in pieces for the victims and for our city as we all come to grips with this terrible tragedy,” they said.

What we know about the victims

A 10-year-old girl and an 18-year-old woman died after a gunman opened fire on a busy avenue in the Greektown district of Toronto.

So far, the only victim who has been identified is Reese Fallon, 18.



Mr Erskine Smith told media that the family was “devastated” and was asking for privacy at this time. “She was a local young Liberal, smart, passionate and full of energy,” the Liberal MP told the BBC in a statement. “It is a huge loss.”

Ms Fallon was a recent high school graduate and, in a statement, the Toronto District School Board said they were “heartbroken” by the news.

The school board said she “was highly regarded by staff and loved by her friends”. According to her Facebook profile, she was about to begin studying at McMaster University.


A second victim has died after a gunman opened fire in a popular Toronto neighborhood late Sunday night. The shooter, a 29-year-old man, is also dead, according to Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit.

Police said the second victim died Monday morning. Neither that victim nor the one who died overnight have been publicly identified.

The motive and information about the shooter remain unknown so far.

In a nutshell

It’s not clear what motivated the shooter, police said. They’re investigating “every possible motive, including terrorism,” Saunders said.

Toronto Mayor John Tory urged people not to draw any conclusions and let police investigate the .

The shooter, who had a handgun, died from an apparent gunshot wound, but it’s not clear if it was self-inflicted or as a result of exchanging gunfire with police, Saunders told reporters.

A witness who was standing near the scene told CNN partner CTV that he heard about 20 shots and the sound of the weapon being reloaded repeatedly. “And then, I saw the carnage as I ran down the street here to kind of follow the gunfire,” the man told the station, who described the scene as “pretty crazy.”

It’s unclear how many shots were fired, but a person in the neighborhood posted a video on Twitter in which at least five shots can be heard. The user tweeted, “So scary!! The gun violence in Toronto is crazy.”
