“Mary Poppins Returns,” the highly anticipated sequel of Disney’s 54-year-old “Mary Poppins” musical, is coming to theaters on Dec. 19.

Nexter.org knows what to expect from the movie and is it worth watching.

What’s the story?

“Mary Poppins Returns” is set in 1930s London during the “Great Slump.” The Banks children, Michael and Jane, from the 1964 “Mary Poppins” movie are now adults, and Michael has rambunctious children of his own, Annabel, John and the incorrigible Georgie.

Times are tough for Michael and his family; his wife recently died, and he has been having trouble making ends meet. This is where our tale begins — chaos at 17 Cherry Tree Lane and an immediate introduction to the children.

The sequel is a completely new story

Director Rob Marshall says the movie has new music and a fresh plot set in the Depression era and inspired by P.L. Travers’ “Poppins” books. He and co-writers David Magee and John DeLuca “cherry-picked throughout these eight books, our favorite adventures” to use in the movie that is joyful and also has themes of loss; a loss of wonder and a loss of a loved one.

Dick Van Dyke and Meryl Streep appear in the movie

Van Dyke, who was in the first “Poppins,” is now 92 but was still able to dance on a desk for the film, Marshall says. He play Dawes Jr., the son of banker Dawes Sr., who died laughing (and was portrayed by Van Dyke in heavy makeup) in the original film.

Streep, who also was in Marshall’s “Into the Woods,” immediately agreed – with an email that had a number of “yeses” in it – to play Topsy, a part that has “one fabulous musical number,” Marshall says, and is inspired by a male character in the books.

Do you need to watch (or rewatch) the original to enjoy this sequel?

Not at all. This film is clearly crafted for a new generation and can be enjoyed independent of the first. Knowing the premise that Mary Poppins is a magical nanny is enough, and even that’s explained.
