10 years ago we first saw Emma Stone and Jonah Hill in Superbad when they were a little bit older than teenagers. This time both actors are the characters not of the teen comedy movie, but the dark mind-bending drama.

The actors haven’t taken part in any big series, so this one might be a big step in their TV-show career.

Other cool members of the cast

The supporting role includes “Girls” star Jemima Kirke, “The Leftovers” Justin Theroux, Sally Field, who won Oscar two times, and Sonoya Mizuno from “Ex Machina.”

Also, the Indian actress Julia Garner is featured in “Maniac”.

Based on a 2014 Norwegian series

Maniac (2014) is Norwegian series about Espen, who “has escaped into his own head and where his life is a fantastic fantasy world. In real life he is a patient at the psychiatric ward.”

Netflix’s version of TV-series reveals a story of the participants of a mysterious pharmaceutical drug trial.

Stone and Hill play Annie Landsberg and Owen Milgrim, people who don’t know each other but happened to be it the participants of the same trial for different reasons.

The trial is led by Dr. Mantleray (Justin Theroux). She is to change the way the human mind operates, however, it’s not clear what are the methods and what will be after this trial.

Synopsis

Netflix brief synopsis reads: “‘Maniac’ is the story of two strangers who find themselves caught up in a mind-bending pharmaceutical trial gone awry.”

The Netflix official description doesn’t mention asylum setting, however, we can assume that “pharmaceutical trial” refers to the device is shown in the trailer and lets them live inside their own dreams.
