Cary Joji Fukunaga is the director
Fukunaga deputed as a director in the films like “Sin Nombre” and “Jane Eyre,” but he is actually famous for directing the first season of “True Detective” featuring Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson.
This Fukunaga’s first directorial work after “Beasts of No Nation” in 2015. Also, he wrote a screenplay for “It” movie and produced the drama “The Alienist.”

The actors haven’t taken part in any big series, so this one might be a big step in their TV-show career.

The trial is led by Dr. Mantleray (Justin Theroux). She is to change the way the human mind operates, however, it’s not clear what are the methods and what will be after this trial.

Netflix brief synopsis reads: “‘Maniac’ is the story of two strangers who find themselves caught up in a mind-bending pharmaceutical trial gone awry.”
The Netflix official description doesn’t mention asylum setting, however, we can assume that “pharmaceutical trial” refers to the device is shown in the trailer and lets them live inside their own dreams.
