What will you do for cheaper car insurance?

David, who lives in Alberta, wanted a brand new car — a Chevrolet Cruze with all the trimmings. So he invented a bizarre way to get a car insurance and shared it on Reddit earlier this year, where he revealed he had saved almost C$1,100 (US$843) a year.

According to CBC.ca, the 24-year-old man, whose identity they don’t reveal, became a woman on paper to help lower the costs of his insurance on his car. Speaking to the outlet, the man said that he had simply ‘taken advantage of a loophole’ and saved himself some cash.

He told CBC that while he was searching online for car insurance he was given a quote of around C$4,500 a year. He then decided to ask the insurer if the price would drop if he were a female and found that the new quote was around C$3,400 – meaning he would save a pretty decent chunk of cash.

He explained: “I was pretty angry about that. And I didn’t feel like getting screwed over any more.”

So, he asked the insurer to change his gender on the policy but, of course, it’s not allowed.

Tricky plan

David discovered that in Canada, the law requires a doctor’s note which must then be shown to the government who can then allow the gender on legal documents to be changed.

“It was pretty simple,” he said. “I just basically asked for it and told them that I identify as a woman, or I’d like to identify as a woman, and he wrote me the letter I wanted.”

The man says he does not identify as a woman, but said he did to get the note he needed. He posted the doctor’s letter and other paperwork to the government, telling them he needed a new birth certificate which would say he was a woman – and he got one.

He said: “I was quite shocked, but I was also relieved. I felt like I beat the system. I felt like I won.”

Armed with his new paperwork, the man was able to change his policy over to a female one and is now enjoying those savings. He added: “I’m a man, 100 per cent. Legally, I’m a woman. I did it for cheaper car insurance.”

And the statistics are the one to blame for young men pay more

According to the Insurance Bureau of Canada, men under 25 are generally at higher risk of collision than women of the same age, which means their premiums are often higher.

By the way, the same is legit for USA where the price depends on the age and gender as well.

In 2011, the European Union’s highest court ruled the insurance industry’s long-standing practice of charging different rates for men and women “constitutes discrimination.” The European Court of Justice ordered the industry to remove gender consideration from auto, life and medical insurance plans, among others.

Steve Kee, spokesman for the Insurance Bureau of Canada, says he’s heard anecdotal reports of people changing their gender for cheaper insurance, though he doesn’t know how often it happens.
