The union between two lesbians, Elisa and Marcela, is the case that made the history of  Spanish Catholic Church.

Stay tuned with Nexter.org.

Marcela Gracia Ibeas and Elisa Sánchez Loriga were two women that desired to marry each other and live a happy life as any other couple.

How they met

Marcela Gracia Ibeas and Elisa Sánchez Loriga met at the pedagogical courses in La Coruña and fell in love with each other.

Parents were concerned about their relationship and decided to send Marcela to Madrid.

The historian Narciso de Gabriel wrote the book about the women studied in the schools in Galicia.

The institutions were located just a few miles apart that allowed girls to visit each other every evening after the lessons.

The wedding

Marcela announced she was pregnant and was to marry Elisa’s cousin.

Then, Mario appeared, a young cousin of Elisa, who allegedly grew up in London.

With a short haircut and in a man’s suit, Elisa took the name Mario and went to church to marry Marcela.

San Jorge church in A Coruña, Spain, is the place where the two brave women united their souls.

The priest of the church hadn’t noticed anything, he thought it was a regular wedding, however, it turned out, the fiance, Mario, was actually a female!

Thus, this ceremony remains the only one known case of same- marriage in the history of Spanish Catholic Church.

Narciso de Gabriel confirmed in 2011 that this marriage was registered in La Coruña and is still considered valid.

Consequences

The happiness of this couple didn’t last for long: the conservative Europeans didn’t let them live freely – they forced to hide for the rest of life.

In the old Mexican newspaper, an article stated that Elisa committed suicide in 1909.

The story of Marcela and Elisa is the basis for an upcoming movie directed by a Spanish filmmaker – Isabel Coixet.

The picture is entitled as “The Bookshop”.
