Skin infection or rare disease?

The unnamed 11-year-old girl, from the Dak Doa district, prepared for her exams that caused her to sweat blood and triggered by stress. The doctors initially diagnosed her with an infection and, therefore, she was forced to undergo a  given course of treatment.

However, nothing changed after a few months, so at the Quy Hoa National Leprosy Dermatology Hospital decided that it was another disease –  hematidrosis.

What’s hematidrosis?

Patients with this kind of rare and bizarre condition have adrenaline levels around 20 times higher than other people. The anxiety attacks caused by this level of adrenaline makes blood pressure rise, so people like this little girl sweat blood.

The medics state that only one in 10 million people are affected by the weird phenomenon. Vu Tuan Anh, director of the Quy Hoa National Leprosy Dermatology Hospital stated ‘Hematidrosis is characterized by blood oozing from skin. The bleeding is due to the rupture of the very small blood vessels of the skin.’

‘Fear and intense emotional stress could also play a role in the cause of the disease,’ he added.

The treatment

Dr. Anh stated ‘Treatment is a challenge. We may use vitamin C, antidepressants and propranolol but results are undefined.

‘Hematidrosis does not affect lifespan but can cause discomfort and fear. It can also cause stigma in social situations and so reduce quality of life.’

So, basically, it’s all about controlling the level of stress and avoid the intense situation.
