Kate started as a temp

She was a temporary assistant on a Mademoiselle photo shoot and then became an accessories editor, which made her wish to start her own business.

She launched her first line in 1993

In 1993, she released a small line of handbags. By 1996, Kate Spade’s business cost $5 million.

Some of 1993’s items are still sold

Kate Spade’s products are sold from her first collection. “If you can’t keep wearing the things in our line, then we feel we made a mistake,” she stated.

Inspiration is “everywhere”

When she was asked where she found inspiration, Kate’s answer was “everywhere. I don’t purposely go to certain museums of places to find inspiration. I actually really find it in everyday life. It’s dependent on my mood.”

Married to Andy Spade since 1994

Kate met Andy while at Arizona State University. When they got married, Andy served as her business partner and Kate Spade New York creative director.

“We share the same aesthetic and we like the same things,” Andy said. “She happens to be very very detail oriented, and I happen to think more conceptually, in ideas. It’s almost like someone is setting up a volleyball and Kate will come up and make sure all the details work. It’s a team.”

They had a daughter Frances

Frances was born in February 2005 and Spade took some time to raise her daughter.

“I was so removed,” she continued. “I didn’t read magazines. I got involved with my daughter’s school, playdates, baking. It all sounds a little corny, but it wasn’t. It was stepping back and not paying attention, and I enjoyed every minute of it.”

In 2016 she launched a new line

After the retreat from the business, Kate Spade changed her name to Kate Valentine Spade to support her new accessory brand “Frances Valentine.”
