Nexter gives you four main reasons why you shouldn’t miss new crime drama Molly’s Game, releasing on Jan 5 (2018).

Aaron Sorkin

Aaron Sorkin is well known for screenplays for such wonderful movies as A Few Good Men, Steve Jobs, The Newsroom (TV Series), The Social Network and Moneyball.

This time Oscar-winning screenwriter debuting as a film director with a story of “poker princess” Molly Bloom. Aaron Sorkin and poker are a pretty interesting match that makes us wait for a long, smart and intense story.

Jessica Chastain

Performing actress Jessica Chastain is, perhaps, the No. 1 reason to see the film. She plays a “poker princess” who is nabbed by the FBI after more than a decade of running illegal card games. Chastain playing strong and ambitious women who find ways to rule in male-dominated worlds: As Molly narrates, her actions are driven by “blinding anger at my powerlessness over the unfair whims of men.”

Based on a true story

The movie tells the real-life story of Molly Bloom, who used to be an Olympic-class skier. Her memoirs became a background for Sorkin’s biography film.

After an injury, she quits sport and started running illegal gambling operations, that caused troubles with the law.

Among her players were famous and powerful movie stars, rappers, athletes and even Russian mobsters. Aaron Sorkin doesn’t name the celebrity players who frequented Bloom’s game in the film, but Bloom does identify some of them in her book, including Ben Affleck, Tobey Maguire and Leonardo DiCaprio. However, she only names people who had already been exposed in the media before her book hit shelves, protecting other players from exposure.

Two years after she leaves the game behind, the FBI arrests her at home, and it’s up to her lawyer, Charlie Jaffey (Idris Elba), to protect her from a potential five-year prison sentence.

Sorkin also tells us Molly’s youth, when she showed early traces of her independent, rebellious streak by sassing her demanding psychologist dad (played by Kevin Costner).
