Happy Prime Day, Jeff

Jeff Bezos, the founder and chief executive, is certainly having a happy Prime Day today.

According to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, a daily tracker of the world’s richest people, Bezos was worth more than $150 billion this morning, which made him the richest person in modern history.

Bezos, 54, has now topped Gates in inflation-adjusted terms. The $100 billion mark that Gates hit briefly in 1999 at the height of the dot-com boom would be worth about $149 billion in today’s dollars. That makes the chief executive officer richer than anyone else on earth since at least 1982, when Forbes published its inaugural wealth ranking.

Bezos crossed the threshold just as prepares to kick off its 36-hour summer sales event, Prime Day. The company’s share price was $1,825.73 at 11:10 a.m. in New York, extending its 2018 gain to 56 percent and giving Bezos a $150.8 billion fortune.

According to Bloomberg, here’s how the list of top 5 richest people on Earth looks today:

As Nexter.org reported previously, Bezos was called the richest person in the world nearly 6 months ago after making $6.1 billion in just five trading days. Then his worth was $105 billion, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index. Forbes, the other major tracker of the net worth of the world’s richest, put Bezos’ net worth at $104.4 billion.

Wait, what?? The website was down for an hour?

The ginormous online retailer’s made-up holiday got off to a rough start on Monday as some users were reporting issues with the website and app.

According to a map from DownDetector.com, the problems appear to be focused in North America. The website states that people started having issues with the site loading at 3:04 p.m. ET,  just minutes after Prime Day launched, and at the time of writing, over 21,000 customers reported issues.

When shoppers went to .com, they saw a picture of a “dog of ” with text that read, “Sorry something went wrong on our end.”

Of course, people freaked out and posted their emotions on Twitter – so here’s how it was:
