Moon colony ambitions

It seems that dreaming about a piece of a space colony is a new trend of rich and powerful. While CEO Elon Musk dreams of sending people to Mars as soon as 2024, Blue Origin CEO Jeff Bezos believes it’s more practical to start out on the moon.

Bezos is convinced that one day “we are going to have to leave this planet.” In an interview with GeekWire, he explained that he wants Blue Origin to work with NASA and the ESA to create a permanent settlement on the Moon, but will do whatever it takes to make it happen. The company already anticipates launching its Blue Moon lander by the mid-2020s, but that’s contingent on getting enough support.

The billionaire tech mogul believes the moon could one day be a home for heavy industry driven by solar power, while Earth would be for residential and light industrial use.

“The Earth is not a very good place to do heavy industry. It’s convenient for us right now,” Bezos said. “But in the not-too-distant future — I’m talking decades, maybe 100 years — it’ll start to be easier to do a lot of the things that we currently do on Earth in space, because we’ll have so much energy.”

During Friday’s chat, Bezos pointed out that the moon is conveniently located, reachable in just a couple of days with the right rocket. Scientists have determined that it has deposits of water ice near the poles that could be converted into drinkable water, breathable air and propellants for refuelable rockets.

“It’s almost like somebody set this up for us,” Bezos said.

Blue Origin has proposed building its Blue Moon lander under the terms of a public-private partnership with NASA. “By the way, we will do that, even if NASA doesn’t do it,” Bezos said. “We’ll do it eventually. We could do it a lot faster through a partnership.”

However, the intention to return to the moon isn’t new got Bezos as in March 2017, he wrote: “It is time for America to return to the moon — this time to stay. A permanently inhabited lunar settlement is a difficult and worthy objective. I sense a lot of people are excited about this.”

He’s the world’s richest person, with a net worth of more than $130 billion, and he’s cashing in a billion dollars’ worth of Amazon stock annually to fund Blue Origin.
